Spectrum News: This center could expand disability health care options

CULVER CITY, Calif. — Alan Kenney would do just about anything for his brother with a developmental disability.
But finding a doctor who could take the time to understand his brother’s disability and find answers for his care needs became a frustrating challenge, Kenney said.
A 2021 study published in Health Affairs found that 56% of physicians strongly agreed that they welcomed patients with disabilities. Read more

When I reflect on how I first became involved with Achievable Health, it felt at the time like a big gamble, but now I can’t imagine my professional life going in any other direction. I had built my career in health care administration and was committed to advancing quality health care for underrepresented communities. In 2013, I attended a training to learn more about Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), community health centers that serve high-need, underserved communities and as such, receive federal funding. When a nonprofit serving Los Angeles’ homeless and foster youth applied last year for aslice of billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott’s latest round of giving, the grouphoped to get $1 million. Instead, the team at Youth Emerging Stronger learned this week it was one of almost300 community groups nationwide to be awarded $2 million. Read more
Achievable Health Receives $2 Million Grant from Mackenzie Scott’s Yield Giving Open Call Initiative

Achievable Health (formerly The Achievable Foundation), a model nonprofit community health center that provides high quality, integrated health care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other vulnerable populations, receives a $2 million gift from MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving Open Call, a game-changing initiative. This marks the largest gift received in Achievable Health’s 11-year history and is double the amount of the grant request submitted. The gift also gives a big boost to the organization’s hopes to expand their health center. Read more
